Op 12 december 2018 organiseerde het Belgisch Contactpunt van het Europees Migratienetwerk (EMN) zijn jaarlijks beleidsevenement rond asiel en migratie. Recente nationale en Europese ontwikkelingen op het vlak van internationale bescherming, legale migratie en integratie kwamen aan bod, alsook de recente evoluties aangaande irreguliere migratie, mensenhandel en terugkeer.
22 (lid)staten verstrekte informatie over hun definitie van het begrip kwetsbaarheid en hun werkwijzen met betrekking tot de identificatie en de zorg voor kwetsbare aanvragers van internationale bescherming met speciale opvangbehoeften.

De regering keurde op 24 maart 2018 een nieuw afbouwplan van opvangplaatsen voor verzoekers om internationale bescherming goed. Vandaag bestaat het opvangnetwerk uit 23.815 opvangplaatsen. Dat moet in 2019 terug gebracht zijn tot 16.629 opvangplaatsen, waarvan 10.044 collectieve plaatsen en 6.585 individuele opvangplaatsen. Met dit plan keert het netwerk terug naar het normale niveau van vóór de opvangcrisis.

Het rapport was de Belgische contributie voor een vergelijkend EU syntheserapport over het onderwerp die het beleid, regelgeving en praktijk in 25 lidstaten en Noorwegen beschrijft.
In 2018 zal België in totaal 1.150 vluchtelingen selecteren (Syriërs, Congolezen en vluchtelingen uit de centrale Middellandse Zeeroute) in het kader van het hervestigingsprogramma in België.
