Deze multistakeholderbijeenkomst markeert de 10e verjaardag van het EMN Platform on Statelessness en brengt beleidsmakers, praktijkdeskundigen, internationale organisaties, onderzoekers en vertegenwoordigers van het maatschappelijk middenveld samen om terug te blikken op een decennium van samenwerking en kennisuitwisseling rond staatloosheid in Europa. Tijdens het evenement wordt ook de meest recente EMN Inform over staatloosheid voorgesteld. Daarnaast biedt de bijeenkomst de gelegenheid om de veranderende uitdagingen, toekomstige prioriteiten en de verdere samenwerking te bespreken.

Tijdens deze high-level conferentie zullen nieuwe benaderingen voor het beheer van arbeidsimmigratie worden onderzocht, als reactie op het veranderende arbeids- en vaardighedenlandschap in Europa. Het evenement brengt beleidsmakers, deskundigen, sociale partners en andere belanghebbenden uit de EU en daarbuiten bijeen om te onderzoeken hoe arbeidsmobiliteit kan bijdragen aan het aanpakken van tekorten aan arbeidskrachten en vakbekwame mensen, het concurrentievermogen kan ondersteunen en zowel lokale arbeidsmarkten als migrerende werknemers ten goede kan komen.

Deze expertbijeenkomst onderzoekt Europese ervaringen met het bevorderen van toegankelijkheid en inclusie in digitale migratieprocedures, met bijzondere aandacht voor aanvragers met een handicap en personen die digitale drempels ondervinden. Op basis van de bevindingen van een recente EMN Inform brengt het evenement beleidsmakers, toegankelijkheidsexperts en praktijkdeskundigen samen om nationale benaderingen, uitdagingen bij de uitvoering en goede praktijken in EMN-leden en waarnemende landen te bespreken.

Four months after the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum became fully applicable across the European Union, this conference will take stock of its initial implementation and examine its implications for fundamental rights. Bringing together legal practitioners, academics, policymakers and civil society representatives, the event will provide an opportunity to reflect on the first lessons learned in Belgium and across other EU Member States.

This year’s EMN Austria Conference will explore the future of the Schengen Area, bringing together representatives from EU institutions, Member States and international organisations to discuss key developments and challenges affecting Schengen cooperation. The conference will examine Schengen governance within the European migration architecture, the role of technologically advanced external border protection and the importance of the external dimension of Schengen.

Tijdens deze conferentie wordt ingegaan op de Europese en Nederlandse ervaringen met het bevorderen van de vroegtijdige integratie van personen die internationale bescherming hebben aangevraagd, met speciale aandacht voor werkgelegenheid, het leren van de taal en culturele oriëntatie. Op basis van de bevindingen van een nieuw EMN Inform brengt het evenement beleidsmakers, deskundigen en professionals samen om verschillende nationale benaderingen, uitdagingen bij de uitvoering en good practices uit heel Europa te bespreken.

Tijdens deze nationale conferentie zullen de uitdagingen en kansen worden besproken die samenhangen met de integratie en participatie van jonge migranten en jongeren met een migratieachtergrond in een steeds diverser wordend Europa. Er zal worden ingegaan op de rol van onderwijs, sport, cultuur en de digitale omgeving bij het bevorderen van sociale inclusie, waarbij ook belemmeringen zoals racisme en discriminatie aan bod komen.

Refugee Walk 2026 is an annual fundraising walking event organised by Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen. Thousands of participants will walk either 20 km or 40 km on 4 October, choosing to join the central event in Brussels or to follow a self-selected route elsewhere. Walkers participate individually or with friends, colleagues, or organisations, combining physical activity with a visible show of solidarity for refugees.

Belgium begins the gradual introduction of a new model of the Registration Certificate (RC), also known as the “orange card”, on 28 September 2026. The new RC takes the form of a secure passport-type booklet and is being introduced alongside the existing orange card and temporary A4 model.

Ministers from 18 EU and non-EU countries and representatives of the European Commission met in Munich on 26 September for the second Munich Migration Meeting, hosted by German Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt. The informal meeting focused on the implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, the protection of the EU’s external borders and returns.

The European Commission has sent a letter of formal notice to Belgium and 19 other EU Member States for failing to communicate the complete transposition of the revised EU Anti-Trafficking Directive. The Commission sent the letters on 25 September 2026, after the deadline for Member States to transpose the Directive into national law had expired.

Op 23 en 24 september 2026 organiseerde België in Brussel de 8e workshop voor vertegenwoordigers van gesloten centra, waaraan 42 deelnemers uit 18 landen deelnamen, naast twee vertegenwoordigers van het Agentschap van de Europese Unie voor Asiel (EUAA). De workshop, die gezamenlijk werd georganiseerd door de Belgische Dienst voor Vreemdelingenzaken, EMN België, EMN Luxemburg en het detentiecentrum van het Luxemburgse Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken, bood vertegenwoordigers een informele setting om ervaringen uit te wisselen, gemeenschappelijke uitdagingen te bespreken en mogelijkheden voor verdere samenwerking te verkennen.

Fedasil has announced the deactivation of 560 accommodation places for unaccompanied minors (UAMs), following a decrease in the number of UAM arrivals in Belgium since 2023. The measure forms part of Fedasil’s policy of adjusting its reception capacity to changing needs.

On 21 September 2026, Caritas International Belgium launched its "Humanity Is Unstoppable" campaign in Brussels. A large teddy bear appeared at several locations across the city, including Brussels-Central station, the Grand-Place, Flagey and Place Luxembourg, to draw attention to the experiences of people forced to flee, particularly children.

Belgium participated in an international law enforcement operation targeting human trafficking for labour exploitation in the restaurant sector. Coordinated across five European countries on 18 September 2026, the operation focused on a criminal network suspected of exploiting mainly Indian nationals. In Belgium, one restaurant was inspected as part of the coordinated action, which led to two arrests and the identification of more than 70 potential victims.

On 17 September 2026, a delegation of the Council of Europe’s European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) concluded an ad hoc visit to Belgium, carried out from 8 to 17 September. The visit focused on the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty under immigration legislation.

On 16 September 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the preparation of a new European Emergency Response Framework to enable the EU to respond to exceptional situations involving mass movements of people at the EU’s external borders. The announcement was made in her annual State of the Union address, which also set out priorities concerning the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, border management and returns.

In the first eight months of 2026, 1.239 prisoners without a residence permit were returned to their country of origin following their detention in Belgium, according to figures published by the Immigration Office. This represents an increase compared with the 991 returns recorded during the same period in 2025 and the 828 recorded in 2024.

On 15 September 2026, the European Commission proposed a package of measures to facilitate labour mobility and strengthen the enforcement of EU rules across borders. The package includes five legislative proposals covering the digitalisation of social security documents, the portability and recognition of qualifications, the recognition of qualifications obtained outside the EU, and the mandate of the European Labour Authority (ELA), including its role in relation to third-country nationals.

In the first half of 2026, EU+ countries received around 332.000 applications for international protection, 17% fewer than during the same period in 2025, according to the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA). This was the lowest number recorded for the first half of a year since 2021. The EUAA also reported a decline in pending cases at first instance, although older cases continued to account for a large share of the caseload.
