Op 6 juni 2025 nam de Vlaamse regering een belangrijke maatregel om de integratie van nieuwkomers in Vlaanderen te verbeteren. Het gaat om de ontwikkeling van voortrajecten in het land van herkomst voor mensen die naar Vlaanderen willen komen in het kader van gezinshereniging of arbeidsmigratie. Deze maatregel bouwt verder op eerdere proefprojecten en heeft als doel om gezinsherenigers en arbeidsmigranten via een digitale cursus maatschappelijke oriëntatie beter voor te bereiden op het leven in Vlaanderen. Deze stap maakt deel uit van het Vlaamse Regeerakkoord 2024–2029.

Op 5 juni 2025 benadrukt Wereldmilieudag de complexe verbanden tussen klimaatverandering en menselijke mobiliteit. Het United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) en de Internationale Organisatie voor Migratie (IOM) publiceerden verklaringen waarin zij zowel de omvang van klimaatgerelateerde ontheemding als de groeiende erkenning van de potentiële bijdragen van migranten aan ecologische veerkracht onderstrepen. Discussies over de rol van migranten bij het aanpakken van milieuproblemen krijgen steeds meer aandacht, onder andere in een recente podcast van het Migration Policy Institute (MPI).

Op 4 juni 2025 heeft de Europese Commissie voorgesteld om de tijdelijke bescherming voor ontheemden die vluchten voor het conflict in Oekraïne te verlengen tot 4 maart 2027. Met dit voorstel wil de Commissie juridische zekerheid bieden aan de begunstigden en de lidstaten door een consistent beschermingsniveau in de hele Europese Unie te behouden. Daarnaast stelde de Commissie een pakket maatregelen voor om een gecoördineerde overgang uit de tijdelijke bescherming te faciliteren.

Op 3 juni 2025 heeft het Hof van Justitie van de Europese Unie (HvJ-EU) een uitspraak gedaan die de reikwijdte van het strafbaar feit van het faciliteren van illegale binnenkomst in de EU verduidelijkt. Het Hof oordeelde dat een onderdaan van een derde land niet strafrechtelijk mag worden vervolgd voor het binnenbrengen van minderjarigen onder zijn of haar hoede in een EU-lidstaat, ook al is deze binnenkomst in strijd met de grensregels. Deze beslissing benadrukt de bescherming van gezinsverantwoordelijkheden en fundamentele rechten binnen het EU-recht.

In response to a recent call by several European Heads of State to reinterpret the European Convention on Human Rights, six Belgian human rights institutions have voiced strong concerns. They warn that such initiatives risk undermining the authority and independence of the European Court of Human Rights. The institutions urge the Belgian federal government to remain consistent with its international commitments and to clearly reaffirm its support for the Court and the Convention.

On 27 May 2025, the Belgian Contact Point to the European Migration Network (EMN) participated in a capacity-building session on guardianship and the quality of care for asylum-seeking children in the context of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The seminar was organised by the European Network of Ombudspersons for Children (ENOC), in collaboration with OKaJu (Ombudsman for Children in Luxembourg – Ombudsman fir Kanner a Jugendlecher) and the Luxembourgish Contact Point to the EMN. The aim of the session was to discuss the impact of the new Pact on children in asylum procedures.

Backed by Italy and Denmark, a group of nine EU Member States has issued a letter calling for a new interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to facilitate the expulsion of foreign nationals convicted of crimes. While the letter's authors frame it as a call for open discussion, the move has raised concerns over judicial independence and the protection of fundamental rights in Europe.

Op 21 en 22 mei 2025 organiseerde de Return Expert Group van het Europees Migratienetwerk (EMN REG), in samenwerking met de Dienst Vreemdelingenzaken en EMN België, een tweedaagse workshop die 50 experten van EU-lidstaten, EU-agentschappen (waaronder Frontex en de EUAA), maatschappelijke organisaties en internationale organisaties samenbracht. Het evenement richtte zich op de ontwikkeling en implementatie van effectieve alternatieven voor detentie (ATD’s) binnen het migratie- en terugkeerbeleid van de EU.

The European Commission has released new figures revealing a substantial rise in short-stay visa applications to the EU and Schengen-associated countries in 2024. With over 11.7 million applications submitted, the upward trend reflects a continued post-pandemic recovery, although numbers remain below pre-COVID levels. Notably, Bulgaria and Romania began issuing Schengen visas on 31 March 2024, further integrating into the Schengen visa system.

On 20 May 2025, the European Commission put forward a proposal to revise the rules governing the application of the safe third country concept. The proposal, which inter alia removes the requirement to establish a connection between the applicant and the safe third country, is now subject to approval by the European Parliament and the Council. It has prompted a range of reactions, including expressions of support as well as more critical assessments.

Op 17 mei, de Internationale Dag tegen Homofobie, Bifobie en Transfobie (IDAHOBIT), heeft de organisatie Prisme een reeks aanbevelingen bekendgemaakt die de uitdagingen benadrukken waarmee LGBTQIA+ personen die  om internationale bescherming verzoeken in België worden geconfronteerd. Deze bevindingen wijzen op verschillende tekortkomingen in het opvang- en asielsysteem en schetsen maatregelen om inclusievere procedures te waarborgen.

On 13 May 2025, Belgian authorities arrested six individuals in West Flanders as part of a coordinated international operation targeting an organised migrant smuggling network suspected of facilitating the irregular entry of up to 300 non-EU nationals into the European Union. In total, fifteen suspects were apprehended in Belgium, Germany and Poland, in a series of actions supported by Europol and Eurojust and involving close cooperation between law enforcement and judicial authorities in the participating countries.

According to Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, 4.922 persons obtained Belgian nationality in February 2025. The main countries of origin of people who acquired Belgian nationality in February are Morocco, Romania, Syria, Turkey and Afghanistan.

According to preliminary data published by Frontex, the number of irregular border crossings into the European Union decreased by 27% between January and April 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. Nearly 47.000 crossings were detected during the first four months of 2025.

Op 11-12 mei 2025 bezocht de Belgische Minister voor Asiel en Migratie Anneleen Van Bossuyt Chisinau om te benadrukken dat verzoeken om internationale bescherming van Moldavische staatsburgers—afkomstig uit een land dat als veilig wordt beschouwd—in België via een versnelde procedure worden verwerkt. Ze kondigde ook de onmiddellijke stopzetting van de terugkeerpremie aan, die door het kabinet wordt gezien als een stimulans voor misbruik van het asielsysteem.

The European Commission has approved an additional €3 billion in funding to assist Member States in implementing the Pact on Migration and Asylum and to support the hosting of beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine. This amount is composed of €1.8 billion from the revision of the current Multiannual Financial Framework and a €1.2 billion top-up to the Asylum Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and the Border Management and Visa Instrument (BMVI).

In 2024, 19.435 people participated in the Social Orientation (Maatschappelijke Oriëntatie, MO) course in Flanders. This marks a significant increase in participation. Alongside the rising numbers of participants in the Social Orientation course, the demand for Dutch as a Second Language (NT2) courses also remains high, as evidenced by recent reports from AMAL vzw, Atlas Antwerp, and the Agency for Integration and Civic Integration.

On 7 May 2025, the Court of First Instance of West Flanders, Bruges division, sentenced the Vietnamese national, N. Van Kim (34), in absentia to twelve years’ imprisonment and a fine of €616,000 for human smuggling under aggravating circumstances. The court also ordered the deprivation of his civil rights for ten years and issued a warrant for his immediate arrest.

On the occasion of Labour Day, Fedasil published new figures on the professional activity of applicants for international protection residing in reception centres. In 2024, 41% of those allowed to work were active on the Belgian labour market. The data show differences in employment rates depending on gender, age, and nationality.

Myria, het Federaal Migratiecentrum, waarschuwt dat de maatregelen die de federale regering aankondigde in het “Paasakkoord” het recht op gezinsleven schenden. De instelling maakte in een persbericht van dinsdag bekend dat ze haar opmerkingen heeft gedeeld met de regering en hoopt op een constructieve dialoog.

On 28 April 2025, Samusocial launched a new shelter dedicated to unaccompanied foreign minors living on the streets, often referred to as “wandering” minors. This centre aims to provide a safe and supportive space for young people with complex needs who do not have access to existing aid structures.

Tijdens een lunch-and-learn sessie ontmoette het EMN België-team ongeveer 30 medewerkers van Fedasil om het werk van het Europese Migratienetwerk voor te stellen, actieve deelname aan het EMN netwerk aan te moedigen en updates te geven over recente en aankomende publicaties en activiteiten.

On 23 April 2025, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) announced an extension of the suspension of the processing of applications for international protection from Syrian nationals. The suspension, initially introduced on 9 December 2024, will remain in place until at least the end of July 2025.

This data comes from Bruss’help’s eighth count, carried out through a large-scale collaboration across sectors and indicating a worsening trend of homelessness in Brussels. For the first time, data from reception centres for applicants for international protection were collected. Out of 5.135 individuals, 17 were required to leave their centre within 30 days without any housing solution, while 94 remained beyond their expected departure due to the lack of stable housing options.

The European Commission has issued a proposal to accelerate the implementation of certain aspects of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, with the aim of helping Member States process asylum claims more quickly, particularly for applicants whose claims are likely to be unfounded. In addition, the proposal includes the establishment of an EU-wide list of safe countries of origin. Human rights organisations have raised concerns, especially about the inclusion of Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco, which they argue have ongoing human rights issues.
