On 11 July, the Belgian Council of Ministers approved a draft bill that broadens the circumstances under which Belgian nationality may be withdrawn. This reform enlarges the list of serious criminal offences that can lead to loss of nationality and mandates judges to systematically consider deprivation in terrorism convictions. The draft bill will now be submitted to the Council of State for its opinion.

Het Europees Migratienetwerk (EMN) heeft zijn Asiel- en Migratieoverzicht 2024 gepubliceerd, met bijdragen van 30 Europese landen. Het Belgische en EU overzicht werden beiden vandaag gepubliceerd, waarbij het Europese overzicht vandaag, 9 juli 2025, werd gepresenteerd tijdens een online lanceringsevenement met meer dan 260 deelnemers. Voor het eerst is het EU overzicht beschikbaar in een interactief formaat dat dynamische toegang biedt tot belangrijke gegevens en trends.

In 2024, 774 unaccompanied foreign minors were reported missing in Belgium—nearly fifteen every week. Around 100 of these cases were considered particularly alarming. The figures, disclosed in response to a parliamentary question by MP Matti Vandemaele (Groen), rank Belgium among the European countries most affected by the phenomenon. Child protection organisations warn that structural gaps may hinder the identification and protection of vulnerable children.

On 11 June 2024, the European Commission proposed to extend the temporary protection for people fleeing Russia's aggression against Ukraine for another year, from 5 March 2025 to 4 March 2026. The Council still needs to formally adopt the proposal.

During a joint webinar, experts from the European Migration Network and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development highlighted the positive trends characterizing the labour market integration of Ukrainians, including employment rates and their progress, main sectors of employment, and most common policies and measures for facilitating labour market integration. They also identified the difficulties and remaining challenges in this domain.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Belgium has granted temporary protection to 93.343 Ukrainians, with a sharp decline beginning in 2023 and continuing into 2024 and early 2025. As the number of arrivals has slowed and the focus shifts to integration efforts, both the Flemish and Walloon governments plan to gradually reduce reception capacity for beneficiaries of temporary protection in the coming months.

Eurostat published today data referring to the attribution of temporary protection status based on the Council Implementing Decision 2022/382 of 4 March 2022. On 31 August 2023, almost 4.2 million non-EU citizens, who fled Ukraine as a consequence of the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022, had temporary protection status in EU countries. 

In 2024, a total of 17.939 newcomers obtained an integration certificate in Flanders, according to the Jaarrapport Inburgering 2024. This is the highest number recorded since 2018 and marks a 16% increase compared to the previous year.

From 1 July to 31 December 2025, Denmark will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Presidency’s programme emphasises key priorities such as tackling irregular migration, strengthening border control, and fostering cooperation with partner countries. It also aims to enhance legal migration pathways and address the situation of displaced persons.

Myria has published the first thematic section of its 2025 annual report. This section, entitled "Population and movements", reveals that foreign nationals made up over 13% of the Belgian population as of 1 January 2024. Immigration from Romania, France and Ukraine was particularly high. The report also details key trends in foreign residence permits, demographic profiles and migratory flows.

Nearly one in eight self-employed workers in Belgium do not hold Belgian nationality. This proportion rises to more than four in ten in the Brussels-Capital Region. An analysis of recent data from the National Institute for Social Security of the Self-Employed (INASTI) by the social insurance fund Acerta highlights these figures. The study also reveals differences in age, sector activity, and income between Belgian and non-Belgian self-employed individuals.

Op de Internationale Dag ter Ondersteuning van Slachtoffers van Foltering benadrukt NANSEN haar inzet voor aanvragers van internationale bescherming die foltering hebben ervaren. De organisatie biedt juridische informatie en maatwerkondersteuning om hen te helpen de beschermingsprocedure zo goed mogelijk te doorlopen. Slachtoffers van foltering hebben recht op specifieke procedurele waarborgen. NANSEN waakt ervoor dat deze rechten gedurende het gehele aanvraagproces worden gerespecteerd.

Op 24 juni 2025 nam EMN België deel aan de conferentie in het kader van het Poolse voorzitterschap over aanpak van irreguliere migratie. Tijdens de besprekingen werd dit fenomeen vanuit drie perspectieven bekeken: versterking van de buitengrenzen van de EU om irreguliere migratie te voorkomen, bestrijding van migrantensmokkel om criminele netwerken te ontmantelen, en aanpak van de onderliggende oorzaken van irreguliere migratie en het voorzien van veilige en legale alternatieven.

Op 24 juni 2025 heeft Albanië officieel de status van waarnemend land binnen het Europees Migratienetwerk (EMN) gekregen. Dit werd bevestigd met de ondertekening van een Administratieve Overeenkomst tussen de Europese Commissie en het Albanese Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken. De ondertekening vond plaats tijdens een conferentie die mede werd georganiseerd door EMN Polen.

Wereldvluchtelingendag wordt elk jaar gevierd op 20 juni om stil te staan bij de situatie van vluchtelingen wereldwijd. De dag heeft als doel het vergroten van het publieke bewustzijn en het bevorderen van begrip voor de uitdagingen waarmee ontheemden worden geconfronteerd. Over de hele wereld – ook in België – vinden er getuigenissen, evenementen en initiatieven plaats. Dit jaar staat Wereldvluchtelingendag in het teken van solidariteit met vluchtelingen.

Op 19 juni 2025 heeft het Hof van Justitie van de Europese Unie een uitspraak gedaan naar aanleiding van een verwijzingsvraag van de Franstalige Rechtbank van Eerste Aanleg te Brussel over beroepsprocedures na weigering van studentenvisa. De verwijzing volgde op zorgen geuit door Belgische advocaten en de NGO CIRÉ, die benadrukten dat late kennisgeving van weigeringen vaak verhindert dat studenten effectief beroep kunnen instellen. Het Hof verduidelijkte dat, hoewel geen spoedprocedure verplicht is, nationale systemen moeten waarborgen dat visumbeslissingen en daaraan gerelateerde beroepsprocedures tijdig worden afgehandeld, zodat een zinvolle rechterlijke toets mogelijk is.

Op 19 juni 2025 kondigden minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Bernard Quintin en staatssecretaris voor Asiel en Migratie Anneleen Van Bossuyt aan dat vanaf de zomer van 2025 de federale politie, lokale politie en Dienst Vreemdelingenzaken zullen samenwerken om gerichte controles binnen België uit te voeren. Deze maatregelen zijn bedoeld om irreguliere migratie en secundaire migratiebewegingen naar België tegen te gaan. Er zijn reacties gekomen over de capaciteit die nodig is om dergelijke controles uit te voeren, over hun daadwerkelijke effectiviteit in het terugdringen van irreguliere migratie, en over de vraag of ze een echt afschrikkend effect kunnen hebben of grotendeels symbolisch blijven.

According to Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, 5.539 persons obtained Belgian nationality in March 2025. The main countries of origin of people who acquired Belgian nationality in March are Morocco, Romania, Syria, Turkey and Afghanistan.

Thirty-eight members of a Belgian-Chinese human trafficking network have been formally referred by the Ghent chamber of indictment to the correctional court. They face multiple charges including sexual exploitation, trafficking, pimping, money laundering, and document forgery. The Federal Migration Centre, Myria, has joined the case as a civil party, representing the interests of victims. 

At their meeting on 13 June 2025, EU Home Affairs Ministers reached a political agreement to extend by one year, until March 2027, the temporary protection for people displaced from Ukraine. They also discussed ways to improve readmission cooperation with third countries and endorsed new priorities for the Schengen area.

Fedasil heeft een verdere vermindering aangekondigd van het aantal opvangplaatsen voor niet-begeleide minderjarige vreemdelingen (NBMV). Tegen 1 september 2025 zullen 279 plaatsen uit het netwerk worden gehaald. Deze maatregel, die in april werd goedgekeurd, is een reactie op de aanhoudende daling van het aantal aankomsten sinds 2023. Het merendeel van de betrokken plaatsen zal worden omgevormd tot generieke opvangplaatsen.

Op 1 januari 2025 had meer dan een derde van de Belgische bevolking een buitenlandse herkomst, zo blijkt uit de nieuwste cijfers van Statbel, het Belgische statistiekbureau. Terwijl 64% van de inwoners Belgen met een Belgische herkomst zijn, bestaat de overige 36% uit Belgen met een buitenlandse herkomst en uit niet-Belgen. Regionale verschillen en evoluties over de afgelopen twintig jaar tonen veranderende demografische patronen aan.

On 11 June 2025, the European Commission published a report reviewing the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, halfway through its implementation phase, which is expected to be completed by June 2026. The report provides an overview of progress across the main elements of the Common Implementation Plan, while identifying remaining operational and legal challenges. A mid-term review of the Action Plan on Integration and Inclusion 2021–2027 was also released.

According to a press release published on 11 June 2025, Statbel reported that 60.108 individuals acquired Belgian nationality in 2024. The five most common previous nationalities among those who became Belgian were Moroccan, Syrian, Romanian, Afghan and Turkish.

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has released its 2025 Fundamental Rights Report, offering a detailed overview of key developments in the EU’s human rights landscape. Among the areas of concern, the report draws particular attention to migration and asylum at the EU’s external borders, where challenges continue to raise fundamental rights issues.
