The Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGVS) announced on 15 January 2026 that it is temporarily suspending the processing of applications for international protection from Iranian nationals. The CGVS stated that, given the current situation in Iran and the difficulty in obtaining sufficiently reliable and up-to-date information, it is currently unable to assess the need for protection accurately.

On 8 January 2026, the Resettlement Coalition issued a joint statement expressing concern over the European Union’s newly adopted Union Resettlement and Humanitarian Admission Plan (URP) for 2026–2027. While welcoming the plan’s adoption as a step towards embedding resettlement in EU migration policy, the coalition highlighted that the number of pledges is dramatically lower than previous commitments and that the eligibility criteria are narrow. De ontwikkelingen inzake databeheer kenden in de laatste jaren een hoge vlucht, niet in het minst bij de overheidsinstellingen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor het verlenen van internationale bescherming, waar o.a. een verhoogde influx van verzoeken om internationale bescherming en de COVID-19 pandemie de druk verhoogden om op een efficiënte wijze data te beheren. EMN onderzocht de situatie en de ontwikkelingen op vlak van data management in de asielprocedure tussen 2014 en 2020, evenals het gecreëerde wettelijk kader hieromtrent. Aanvullend publiceerde EMN België een eigen studie, die het beheer van data in de Belgische asielprocedure specifiek uitlicht.

What kind of data is collected by EU Member States and Norway and how is the data managed in the different phases of the asylum procedure? This new EMN Study provides comparable information and examples from 25 countries on different aspects of data management, including data cross-checking against national and international databases, data quality accuracy, and data protection issues. It also maps challenges encountered, and actions taken to respond to them. The study contributes to capacity-building of experts working in the field of asylum and generates a better understanding of the policies and process in place across Europe.
The Belgian standalone study will be published in the week of 28 June 2021.

On 10 June 2021, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) published its fundamental rights report that takes stock of the developments regarding fundamental rights in the EU in 2020. Additionally, FRA also published its opinions on these developments and added a synopsis of the evidence supporting these opinions.
