Mensenhandel is een misdaad tegen de fundamentele rechten van het slachtoffer. Het kan verschillende vormen aannemen, zoals seksuele uitbuiting, gedwongen arbeid of diensten, slavernij en slavernij-gerelateerde praktijken, evenals het verwijderen van organen. Mensenhandel is verboden onder tal van EU- en internationale instrumenten. Toch blijft aanhoudende vraag naar seksuele diensten en naar laagbetaalde handarbeiders kansen bieden voor mensenhandelaars om personen uit te buiten.

De ontwikkelingen inzake databeheer kenden in de laatste jaren een hoge vlucht, niet in het minst bij de overheidsinstellingen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor het verlenen van internationale bescherming, waar o.a. een verhoogde influx van verzoeken om internationale bescherming en de COVID-19 pandemie de druk verhoogden om op een efficiënte wijze data te beheren. EMN onderzocht de situatie en de ontwikkelingen op vlak van data management in de asielprocedure tussen 2014 en 2020, evenals het gecreëerde wettelijk kader hieromtrent. Aanvullend publiceerde EMN België een eigen studie, die het beheer van data in de Belgische asielprocedure specifiek uitlicht.

This new EMN Study provides comparable information and examples from 25 countries on different aspects of data management, including data cross-checking against national and international databases, data quality accuracy, and data protection issues. It also maps challenges encountered, and actions taken to respond to them. The study contributes to capacity-building of experts working in the field of asylum and generates a better understanding of the policies and process in place across Europe.   The Belgian standalone study will be published in the week of 28 June 2021.
