Eight officers from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) have started work at Brussels Airport to assist in return operations. They will operate alongside Belgian police to increase the number of returns. Their deployment follows the adoption of national legislation and a Royal Decree defining their powers and operational zones.

On 4 September, the non-profit organisation Mentor Jeunes held an online information session for families willing to foster unaccompanied foreign minors. The initiative highlighted foster care as an alternative to collective centres, offering children a safe and structured home environment. It also explained the individualised support available to both families and young people, aiming to encourage more households to consider joining the programme.

From 1 September 2025, the filing fee for appeals before Belgium’s Council for Alien Law Litigation will increase from €186 to €251, marking a rise of approximately 35%. The fee for parties wishing to intervene in ongoing cases will also increase, from €133 to €180. Legal practitioners are advised to inform clients of the new rates. De Belgische Kamer van Volksvertegenwoordigers heeft een wet aangenomen die de kosten voor het registreren van het verkrijgen van de Belgische nationaliteit verhoogt van € 150 naar € 1.000. On 23 July, Belgium officially published two new laws aimed at reducing the burden on international protection procedures and limiting access to reception for certain applicants. In particular, these laws redefine which applications are considered subsequent by including those who have already received protection or a final decision in another EU country, and they limit access to reception facilities and material assistance for this group. The laws reflect the government’s intention to streamline asylum processing and manage reception capacity effectively.

The Belgian Council of Ministers has approved a draft law enabling home searches, with judicial authorisation, in cases involving non-cooperative foreign nationals facing return and posing a threat to public order or national security. The measure is similar to one previously discussed in 2018 and will now be submitted to the Council of State for its opinion. The Belgian Chamber of Representatives has adopted new legislation modifying the conditions for family reunification under the law of 15 December 1980. The changes introduce stricter income requirements and modify waiting periods for certain categories of foreign nationals, particularly those benefiting from international or subsidiary protection. The legislation was approved with a majority vote during a plenary session and aims to regulate access to family reunification, a principal legal pathway for foreign nationals to join family members in Belgium.

On 11 July, the Belgian Council of Ministers approved a draft bill that broadens the circumstances under which Belgian nationality may be withdrawn. This reform enlarges the list of serious criminal offences that can lead to loss of nationality and mandates judges to systematically consider deprivation in terrorism convictions. The draft bill will now be submitted to the Council of State for its opinion.

In 2024, 774 unaccompanied foreign minors were reported missing in Belgium—nearly fifteen every week. Around 100 of these cases were considered particularly alarming. The figures, disclosed in response to a parliamentary question by MP Matti Vandemaele (Groen), rank Belgium among the European countries most affected by the phenomenon. Child protection organisations warn that structural gaps may hinder the identification and protection of vulnerable children.

Myria has published the first thematic section of its 2025 annual report. This section, entitled "Population and movements", reveals that foreign nationals made up over 13% of the Belgian population as of 1 January 2024. Nearly one in eight self-employed workers in Belgium do not hold Belgian nationality. This proportion rises to more than four in ten in the Brussels-Capital Region. An analysis of recent data from the National Institute for Social Security of the Self-Employed (INASTI) by the social insurance fund Acerta highlights these figures. The study also reveals differences in age, sector activity, and income between Belgian and non-Belgian self-employed individuals.

De organisatie biedt juridische informatie en maatwerkondersteuning om hen te helpen de beschermingsprocedure zo goed mogelijk te doorlopen. Slachtoffers van foltering hebben recht op specifieke procedurele waarborgen. NANSEN waakt ervoor dat deze rechten gedurende het gehele aanvraagproces worden gerespecteerd.

Op 19 juni 2025 kondigden minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Bernard Quintin en staatssecretaris voor Asiel en Migratie Anneleen Van Bossuyt aan dat vanaf de zomer van 2025 de federale politie, lokale politie en Dienst Vreemdelingenzaken zullen samenwerken om gerichte controles binnen België uit te voeren. Deze maatregelen zijn bedoeld om irreguliere migratie en secundaire migratiebewegingen naar België tegen te gaan. Er zijn reacties gekomen over de capaciteit die nodig is om dergelijke controles uit te voeren, over hun daadwerkelijke effectiviteit in het terugdringen van irreguliere migratie, en over de vraag of ze een echt afschrikkend effect kunnen hebben of grotendeels symbolisch blijven.

Thirty-eight members of a Belgian-Chinese human trafficking network have been formally referred by the Ghent chamber of indictment to the correctional court. They face multiple charges including sexual exploitation, trafficking, pimping, money laundering, and document forgery. The Federal Migration Centre, Myria, has joined the case as a civil party, representing the interests of victims.

Fedasil heeft een verdere vermindering aangekondigd van het aantal opvangplaatsen voor niet-begeleide minderjarige vreemdelingen (NBMV). Tegen 1 september 2025 zullen 279 plaatsen uit het netwerk worden gehaald. Deze maatregel, die in april werd goedgekeurd, is een reactie op de aanhoudende daling van het aantal aankomsten sinds 2023. Het merendeel van de betrokken plaatsen zal worden omgevormd tot generieke opvangplaatsen.
