De EMN Portugal Conferentie 2025 richt zich op de specifieke uitdagingen die voortkomen uit internationale bescherming en de integratie van begunstigden. Het evenement brengt onderzoekers, overheidsinstanties, sociale partners en vertegenwoordigers van de private sector samen om kennis uit te wisselen en innovatieve beleidsmaatregelen en praktijken te verkennen. Deelnemers krijgen de kans om nationale ervaringen te bespreken en succesvolle benaderingen te delen die aan verschillende contexten kunnen worden aangepast. 

Myria, the Federal Migration Centre, has published a new thematic report on the right to family life as part of its annual report "Migration in Figures and Rights 2025". The report provides updated data on first residence permits and visas for family reasons. It also examines recent legislative reforms, which Myria stresses will need close monitoring due to their potential impact on access to family reunification, integration outcomes, and the risk of poverty.

De EMN Litouwen Conferentie zal onderzoeken hoe arbeidsmigratie- en integratiebeleid beter op elkaar kunnen worden afgestemd om tegemoet te komen aan de veranderende arbeidsmarktbehoeften in Europa. Beleidsmakers, experts en praktijkdeskundigen komen samen om manieren te bespreken om coherente en duurzame systemen voor arbeidsmigratie op te bouwen. De discussies richten zich op eerlijke behandeling, inclusie en langetermijnresultaten voor migranten. De conferentie benadrukt het belang van het verbinden van beleidsontwerp met praktische integratiemaatregelen in de hele EU. 

On 26 November 2025, several civil society organisations, including Caritas International and Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen, published a statement warning about rising refusals of temporary protection applications. Between January and October, 2.380 applications were rejected, compared with 1.578 in 2022. The organisations highlighted difficulties in accessing accommodation and support for displaced persons affected. Authorities attribute the increase to changes in European rules and stricter administrative requirements.

The Federal Ombudsman has highlighted persistent challenges for individuals required to submit visa applications in person at Belgian diplomatic or consular posts. These requirements can create significant financial, administrative, and security burdens, particularly for applicants living far from a competent post or in conflict-affected regions. The Ombudsman recommends reviewing visa submission procedures to improve accessibility and consistency.

Deze conferentie maakt gebruik van internationale en Ierse expertise op het gebied van integratie om inzicht te bieden in Ierland binnen een Europese beleidscontext en om bewijsmateriaal te delen over wat werkt in integratiebeleid. Zowel nationale als lokale perspectieven op integratie in Ierland komen aan bod. 

Tijdens dit evenement worden de belangrijkste uitdagingen van het Europese terugkeersysteem besproken, waaronder verschillen in praktijken tussen lidstaten en obstakels bij gedwongen terugkeer. Vervolgens richt de conferentie zich op lopende wetgevende ontwikkelingen en hun gevolgen voor migratiebeheer en het Schengengebied. De deelnemers bespreken de rol van een gemeenschappelijk en effectief terugkeersysteem ter ondersteuning van samenwerking en migratiebeheer onder het nieuwe Pact over Migratie en Asiel. 

Op 20 november 2025 woonde EMN België de lancering bij van het jaarverslag “Rechten op de drempel” van de Vlaamse Kinderrechtencommissaris, naar aanleiding van de Internationale Dag van de Rechten van het Kind. Het verslag belicht aanhoudende uitdagingen die buitenlandse kinderen en jongeren in opvangcentra treffen, waaronder verschillen in leefomstandigheden, veiligheid, hygiëne en toegang tot basisvoorzieningen. 

According to Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, 4.859 persons obtained Belgian nationality in August 2025. The main countries of origin of people who acquired Belgian nationality in August are Morocco, Syria, Romania, Poland and France.

De EMN Finland Conferentie 2025 zal ingaan op de veranderde context van migrantenintegratie in Finland, evenals de uitdagingen en kansen die dit met zich meebrengt. De conferentie legt een bijzondere nadruk op integratiediensten in een vroeg stadium en hun impact op de integratie en werkgelegenheid van migranten. 

On 18 November, the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament reached an agreement on the creation of a platform designed to facilitate the recruitment of non-European workers. The “EU Talent Pool” will connect employers established in the EU with non-EU jobseekers in sectors where Member States face labour shortages. Participation in the Talent Pool will be voluntary for Member States, and the platform will remain free of charge for both jobseekers and employers.

On 17 November 2025, the City of Brussels adopted a motion for a welcoming, responsible and caring city, opposing the draft law allowing judicially authorised home searches for irregularly staying migrants. The motion emphasises that security and human dignity are inextricably linked and states that Brussels must remain a welcoming, responsible and just city, faithful to its constitutional and European obligations.

On 13 November 2025, several civil society organisations held a silent protest outside the Palais de Justice in Brussels to draw attention to the shortage of reception places for third-country nationals. Participants, including advocates, volunteers, and citizens, brought sleeping bags to symbolise people forced to sleep outdoors. The demonstration called for urgent measures to ensure that all individuals entitled to accommodation can access it.

Belgium has laid the first stone of a new short-stay departure centre in Steenokkerzeel, aimed at housing individuals in irregular stay pending return. The 50-place facility is scheduled to open by the end of 2026. It forms part of a broader plan to expand and improve the country’s closed centres.

Deze conferentie is gewijd aan het onderzoeken van manieren om ordelijke migratiesystemen op te bouwen door middel van internationale samenwerking en innovatie. Er zal dieper worden ingegaan op effectieve samenwerkingsmodellen, innovatieve oplossingen en het belang van dialoog en uitwisseling tussen de EU, de lidstaten, derde landen en andere belangrijke actoren, zoals internationale organisaties, bij het vormgeven van reguliere migratie.

This conference, organised by the scientific staff of The Expert Council on Integration and Migration (SVR), will center on the integration processes of refugees and socially disadvantaged migrants, access to citizenship, and the impact of naturalisation on integration. It will also analyse the way different administrations organise and manage the integration and naturalisation processes, particularly for refugees.

Het EMN-Stuurcomité heeft gestemd over de onderwerpen die in 2026 zullen worden geanalyseerd in studies en Informs. In totaal zullen volgend jaar twee studies en acht Informs worden ontwikkeld. Een Belgisch voorstel, getiteld “Het versterken van identiteitsbeheer en fraudepreventie in migratieprocessen”, werd als eerste gerangschikt na de stemming. 

The European Commission has launched the first Annual Migration Management Cycle under the Pact on Migration and Asylum. The cycle provides an annual overview of migration and asylum in the EU and identifies pressures on Member States. It includes the European Annual Asylum and Migration Report, a Commission decision on Member States’ migratory situations, and a proposal for the Annual Solidarity Pool. 

De EMN Slowakije Conferentie richt zich op hoe Slowakije effectieve internationale partnerschappen kan ontwikkelen om arbeidskrapte aan te pakken via eerlijke en duurzame migratie. Het evenement brengt beleidsmakers, experts, werkgevers en migrantenorganisaties uit zowel EU- als niet-EU-landen samen om goede praktijken te delen in het beheer van bilaterale arbeidsmobiliteit. Belangrijke thema’s zijn onder meer de bescherming van arbeidsmigranten, het verbeteren van coördinatie en het waarborgen dat arbeidsmigratie alle betrokken partijen ten goede komt. 

From 3 to 7 November 2025, the Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) conducted an evaluation visit to Belgium under the fourth cycle of its monitoring of the Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings. The evaluation focuses on vulnerabilities to trafficking, the measures taken to prevent and detect them, support victims, and sanction perpetrators, with particular attention to the role of information and communication technologies.
