On 23 April 2026, the Belgian Chamber of Representatives adopted a bill introducing the possibility of imposing a lifetime entry ban on certain foreign nationals. The Belgian Council of Ministers has approved a draft law providing for the possibility of imposing lifetime entry bans on individuals who pose a genuine security threat, based on an assessment by the Coordinating Body for Threat Analysis (OCAM). On 12 October 2025, Belgium began implementing the European Entry-Exit System (EES) for third-country nationals travelling to Europe for short stays. Brussels Airport and Brussels-Midi station (for Eurostar passengers) have planned the necessary infrastructure and procedures to support border registration. EU and Schengen-area travellers are not affected. Full implementation across Europe is scheduled for 10 April 2026.

Op 24 juni 2025 nam EMN België deel aan de conferentie in het kader van het Poolse voorzitterschap over aanpak van irreguliere migratie. Tijdens de besprekingen werd dit fenomeen vanuit drie perspectieven bekeken: versterking van de buitengrenzen van de EU om irreguliere migratie te voorkomen, bestrijding van migrantensmokkel om criminele netwerken te ontmantelen, en aanpak van de onderliggende oorzaken van irreguliere migratie en het voorzien van veilige en legale alternatieven.

Op 19 juni 2025 kondigden minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Bernard Quintin en staatssecretaris voor Asiel en Migratie Anneleen Van Bossuyt aan dat vanaf de zomer van 2025 de federale politie, lokale politie en Dienst Vreemdelingenzaken zullen samenwerken om gerichte controles binnen België uit te voeren. Deze maatregelen zijn bedoeld om irreguliere migratie en secundaire migratiebewegingen naar België tegen te gaan. Er zijn reacties gekomen over de capaciteit die nodig is om dergelijke controles uit te voeren, over hun daadwerkelijke effectiviteit in het terugdringen van irreguliere migratie, en over de vraag of ze een echt afschrikkend effect kunnen hebben of grotendeels symbolisch blijven.

The European Commission has released new figures revealing a substantial rise in short-stay visa applications to the EU and Schengen-associated countries in 2024. With over 11.7 million applications submitted, the upward trend reflects a continued post-pandemic recovery, although numbers remain below pre-COVID levels. Notably, Bulgaria and Romania began issuing Schengen visas on 31 March 2024, further integrating into the Schengen visa system.

EU Home Affairs Ministers approved a roadmap for the gradual implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) starting in October 2025, the revised Eurodac database set to become operational in June 2026 and ETIAS in late 2026. Ministers also reached broad agreement on facilitating go-and-see visits for Syrians in the EU to assess conditions in their home country without losing their protection status, as well as on measures to return Syrian nationals who pose a security threat or have been convicted of crimes.
