During the European Council on 21-22 March 2024, EU leaders reviewed the state of play on migration following the Communication from the Commission and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to continue pursuing a comprehensive approach to migration as agreed in its conclusions of December 2023.

De EU-ministers van Binnenlandse Zaken zijn vandaag in Brussel bijeengekomen tijdens een informele bijeenkomst. De nadruk werd gelegd op de laatste hand te leggen aan de wetteksten van het nieuwe migratie- en asielpact en te beginnen met het uitvoeringsproces. De ministers bespraken ook de toekomst van begunstigden van tijdelijke bescherming in Europa.

In a press release published today, the UN Refugee Agency called on Belgium and Hungary to use their 2024 European Union (EU) Presidencies as an opportunity to finalize the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum and to ensure its protection-sensitive implementation.

De Internationale Organisatie voor Migratie (IOM) kijkt uit naar de samenwerking met het Belgische en Hongaarse voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie en staat klaar om haar steun en expertise aan te bieden. Met het oog op de uitbouw van dit partnerschap publiceert de IOM enkele aanbevelingen over migratie en mobiliteit voor 2024.

België zal de komende zes maanden het voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie waarnemen, een positie die het sinds 2010 niet meer heeft bekleed. Het Belgisch voorzitterschap zal bijzonder belangrijk zijn omdat het de debatten over de Strategische Agenda van de Europese Raad zal sturen en de aanloop zal vormen naar de verkiezingen voor het Europees Parlement in juni 2024.

Deze ochtend stelde eerste minister Alexander De Croo officieel het programma en de prioriteiten van het Belgisch Voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie voor. Vanaf 1 januari 2024 zal België alle vergaderingen en onderhandelingen binnen de Raad voorzitten, en dit gedurende zes maanden.   

The Justice and Home Affairs Council took place in Brussels on 9 and 10 March 2023. Ministers inter alia discussed the internal and external aspects of migration and the overall state of the Schengen area.

The Swedish Presidency programme sets out the priorities and main direction for the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 January until 30 June 2023.

From 1 January to 30 June 2017,  Malta will hold the presidency of the Council of the EU. The presidency will focus on 6 key areas: migration, single market, security, social inclusion, Europe's neighbourhood and maritime sector. 

From 1 July 2016 till the end of the year, Slovakia will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union. A sustainable migration and asylum policy is one of the top priorities of the Presidency.

On 28 June, the European Council meeting focused on the political consequences of the UK referendum and addressed the migratory crisis among other pressing issues. On 29 June, the 27 heads of State met informally and issued a joint statement following the meeting.

The Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union has convened an extraordinary "Justice and Home Affairs" Council focused on Europe's response to the current migration crisis.

In the first half of 2015 Latvia will assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU. The Presidency will focus on the implementation of the Strategic Guidelines in the area of freedom, security and justice (June 2014), as well as on the respective follow-up initiatives.
