Reinforcing the protection of unaccompanied and separated children in Belgium (UNHCR)

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) published a report on the protection of unaccompanied and separated children in Belgium. The report describes the current state of affairs and provides policy recommendations to reinforce the protection of this vulnerable category of foreign nationals.

The 2019 UNHCR report "Reinforcing the protection of unaccompanied and separated children in Belgium" was produced with the support of the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme of the European Commision. The report is based on a consultation process with relevant actors and interviews with unaccompanied and separated children.

The High Commissioner stresses that great challenges persist in this field, despite the rather solid legal framework on the protection of unaccompanied minors in Belgium. He formulates recommendations related to registration, identification, age assessment, guardianship, reception, special services, residence procedures, information and participation.

The report is available in French and Dutch.
