Latest Asylum Trends 2023 (EUAA)

In its analysis of the Latest Asylum Trends for 2023, the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) reports on the applications received in EU+ countries (i.e. the 27 European Union Member States, plus Norway and Switzerland) and the key nationalities that applied for international protection. The analysis also addresses new trends in pending cases as well as recognition rates across EU+ countries.

The key findings of the analysis are the following:

  • In 2023, the EU+ experienced a surge in asylum applications, reaching 1.1 million, marking an 18% increase compared to 2022 and echoing the levels witnessed during the 2015-16 refugee crisis.
     
  • Syrians remained the largest group of applicants in 2023, with a notable 38% increase compared to 2022.
     
  • Throughout 2023, Germany retained its status as the primary destination for asylum seekers within the EU+, accounting for nearly one-third of all applications.
     
  • By the close of 2023, the number of pending cases at first instance reached 883.000, marking the highest count since the peak of the 2015-16 refugee crisis.
     
  • As of the end of 2023, approximately 4.4 million individuals from Ukraine, fleeing Russia's full-scale invasion, found temporary protection in the EU+. Czechia hosted the highest number of beneficiaries per capita, followed by Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland.
