Publication: Migration of Unaccompanied Minors from West Africa to North Africa

This report realized on the basis of a documentary study addresses the question of the protection of unaccompanied minors from West Africa to North Africa from a transnational point of view.

 

This study provides a state of play of the migration of unaccompanied minors from West Africa to North Africa on a transnational perspective.

It produces a first overview of the current situation and aims at supporting the development and implementation of appropriate strategies and programmes within the UNICEF child protection systems and within other organisations concerned by the protection of the rights and welfare of the child.

The migration context is also examined as well as the influence of the EU migration policy, the Maghreb countries' legislation regarding unaccomanied minors, and violations of international obligations regarding the protection of the rights of migrants and children.

Finally, initiatives working for a transnational and multy-agency support to unaccompanied minors in collaboration with the countries of origin, transit and destination will be presented.

The study concludes with recommendations to the attention of governments, regional intergovernmental organizations and all actors in the protection of the child.
