Het kan verschillende vormen aannemen, zoals seksuele uitbuiting, gedwongen arbeid of diensten, slavernij en slavernij-gerelateerde praktijken, evenals het verwijderen van organen. Mensenhandel is verboden onder tal van EU- en internationale instrumenten. Toch blijft aanhoudende vraag naar seksuele diensten en naar laagbetaalde handarbeiders kansen bieden voor mensenhandelaars om personen uit te buiten.
