On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the International Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, UNHCR and NANSEN organise a study day on statelessness. Particular emphasis will be placed on the rights of stateless persons and the specific procedures applicable in Belgium, in particular the new residence procedure for stateless persons.

Myria has published the fifth thematic section of its 2024 annual report. In this section, entitled « International protection », Myria pays particular attention inter alia to the new residence procedure for stateless persons. The Federal Migration Centre underlines that the new procedure is subject to strict conditions and that it provides reduced procedural guarantees for stateless persons.

As the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons celebrates its 70th anniversary on 28 September 2024, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates the number of stateless people worldwide at more than 4 million by the end of 2023.

According to a new report by the European Court of Auditors (ECA), EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF) projects have reported the delivery of many of the planned outputs and partially achieved their objectives. Despite this, the financial support from the EUTF support is still insufficiently focused on the agreed priorities. Furthermore, there are challenges in relation to reporting, ensuring the sustainability of results and safeguarding human rights.

In a press release from 9 September 2024, the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Nicole de Moor reacted to the Hungarian government’s recent threats to send migrants to Brussels. She advocated for a joint, coordinated policy, in which respect for European values and international obligations are central. 

The law of 10 March 2024 which creates a residence status as a stateless person in Belgium, comes into force on 1 September 2024. Applications for admission to stay on the grounds of statelessness must now be submitted directly to the Immigration Office by registered mail.  

Op 1 juli 2024 heeft Hongarije het roterende voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie overgenomen voor een periode van zes maanden. Tot de zeven prioriteiten van Hongarije voor zijn EU-voorzitterschap behoren onder andere "het bestrijden van illegale migratie" en het "een stap dichterbij brengen" van de landen van de Westelijke Balkan bij het EU-lidmaatschap.

Op deze multistakeholder vergadering, gezamenlijk georganiseerd door de Raad van Europa en het EMN Luxemburg in het kader van het 'EMN Platform on Statelessness', zullen deelnemers goede praktijken en uitdagingen kunnen uitwisselen over onderwerpen als de leeftijdsbepaling en het belang van het kind; de bewijslast in het speciale geval van kinderen, en de toegang tot nationaliteit voor kinderen.

According to data collected by IOM’s Missing Migrants Project, 2023, with at least 8565 deaths and disappearances, is the deadliest year since the project's inception in 2014. IOM highlights the urgent need for action to prevent further loss of life.
