The Belgian Contact Point of the European Migration Network has published a report on challenges and practices for establishing identity in the migration process. The report served as the Belgian contribution to an EU Synthesis report on the topic, which compares national policies, legislation and practices on the subject in 25 EU Member States and Norway. 

This EMN Policy Brief examines trends in applications for international protection and irregular movements of third-country national migrants across the EU and Norway. It focuses on the period 2012 - 2016 and – where data is available - up to August 2017. This is an update of the Policy Brief published in December 2015.

This report reviews data relating to migrants' access to information on their rights in 19 reception and detention facilities of 8 EU Member States, including Belgium. It includes recommendations on how to make information provision effective.

This report points to the need for reform in the European asylum system. There is a need for a more balanced distribution of asylum seekers between the Member States and more uniform decision-making on asylum within the EU. The authors argue that a person seeking asylum should have the same chance of being granted asylum irrespective of the country in which the application is made. 

This publication is based on social media research conducted by a small UNHCR team. Between March and December 2016, they issued weekly monitoring reports which have now been compiled into this synopsis.

This briefing provides a short overview of major developments relating to asylum procedures, reception conditions, detention of asylum seekers and content of international protection accros the countries covered by the Asylum Information Database (AIDA).

24 (Member) States provided information on their policies and practices regarding the application of the ‘safe countries of origin’ concept in their procedures for international protection. This ad hoc query was launched by the Dutch and the Estonian Contact Points of the EMN.

We know surprisingly little about how NGOs and asylum lawyers conduct research for asylum claims. To close this gap, Asylos interviewed 20 asylum lawyers and NGO staff in Belgium, France, Germany, Greece and the UK  to understand the challenges of researching evidence, as well as the opportunities for improving the research process. This report presents an overview of the shifting of economic activity to developing countries and examines whether this shift has led to an increase in international migration towards developing countries.

This EMN study offers a comprehensive overview of policies and practices on the functioning of resettlement, humanitarian admission programmes and schemes, as well as private sponsorship programmes for refugees in the EU Member States and Norway 

18 (Member) States provided information on their policies and practices regarding the identification of possible jihadists in the asylum process and of recruitment activities in reception centers. This query was launched in June 2016 by the Dutch Contact Point to the EMN.

This MPI report provides an overview of the barriers to the successful labor market integration of refugees and asylum seekers across all skills levels, and analyzes the targeted support initiatives and structural policy levers available to overcome them.

This report provides a broad overview of recent trends in international migration flows and migration policies in OECD countries and some non-OECD countries.

In this study, Myria, the Federal Migration Centre, closely looks at the reaction of Europe regarding the unusual situation of refugees in 2015 and 2016 and more particularly from a fundamental rights point of view.

18 responses were given to this ad hoc query. The information collected helps to better understand how the funding for refugee resettlement is distributed across the different components of the programmes.

This study, published by the "Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek- en Documentatiecentrum" (Dutch Ministry for Security and Justice), focuses on asylum recognition rates in the EU/EFTA area.

What exchange of information on the application of exclusion 1F takes place currently ? Is it desirable and feasible to enhance international information exchange in this matter? This study answers these questions.

This report examines private sponsorship programmes to permit private individuals, groups, corporations and other entities to sponsor individual refugees for resettlement and accept financial responsibility for them for a period of time.

21 (Member) States provided information on the status granted to beneficiaries of resettlement, as well as on the practical procedure to grant this status and on the integration measures available. This query was launched by the Slovenian National Contact Point.

This Report presents the main findings of the 2014 EMN Study "Policies, practices and data on unaccompanied minors (UAMs)". The study aims to update the findings of the 2008-2009 EMN study on UAMs.

This Report makes the case of the complexity of the drivers favoring displacements as refugees, making protection based on a strict definition of persecution increasingly problematic and challenging to implement.
