World Refugee Day 2011

The World Refugee Day, an initiative of the United Nations, is celebrated since 2001. In 2011 the World Refugee Day is marked by the 60th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention

In Belgium, the day will be celebrated by several events, organized by a wide range of organizations:

Its Belgium edition is organized by several NGO’s, trade unions and non-profit organization. More information is accessible, amongst others, on the websites of Ciré and Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen. So called ‘umbrella events’ will take place in train stations across Belgium, with the main event at the train station Brussels Gare du Midi between 8am – 9.30am. Flyers detailing the experiences of refugees in Belgium and the political demands of the organisations will be distributed to passers-by.

The Federal Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (Fedasil) celebrates the day with different activities: Several reception centres will open their doors for the general public, accompanied by debates, concerts and other events for asylum seekers, neighbours of the centres and the interested public (17th June: reception centre Rixensart, 18th June: Morlanwelz, 19th June Pondrôme, 26th June: Poelkapelle and Arendonk).
