This book reports on various aspects of internationalization processes in medium-sized cities, as they are playing out across Europe today. It examines the following themes:

  • the role of city branding in attracting migrants
  • the processes of sociocultural integration in the bigger context of increasing urban diversity
  • the state of internationalization at universities
  • the skilled migrants' integration into the labour market
  • new modes of urban co-ordination and the developments and good practices in this area

Among other findings, the book underlines that immigrants struggle to find a good position in the labour market. They face substantial difficulties finding employment, and, particularly, getting a job corresponding to their level of qualifications. In Flanders (Belgium), as well as in various other European countries and regions, mentoring is increasingly put forward as a strategy to overcome immigrants’ difficulties in the labour market.

This book attempts to bring some clarity to the added value of mentoring-to-work by sketching a conceptual framework about its potential added value and then testing these assumptions. Data stem from three recently conducted explorative studies on mentoring-to-work.

The findings provide important insights for policy and practice and offer a solid starting point for further empirical research into the added value of mentoring. They also provide insights for policymakers, scholars, and practitioners in designing and evaluating labour market instruments aimed at migrants.

The book is published by the University of Groningen Press.
The list of contributors includes: Warda Belabas, Peter De Cuyper, Jörg Plöger, and Hans de Wit.
