8th EMN Educational Seminar on Migration

The 8th EMN Educational Seminar on Migration will be about “Migration in a Multilateral World” and will take place online from 24 till 26 August 2021. During three intensive days, the Seminar will focus on how migration and multilateralism is intertwined and how the international cooperation affects migrants and refugees in transiting or destination countries.

What?

The EMN Educational Seminar on Migration is a unique learning platform about migration which for three days fosters networking, experience sharing and discussions among (inter)national experts and participants. The seminar provides professionals working in the state institutions, non-governmental sector and other entities (e.g. research bodies, academia, media) with comprehensive and up-to-date information on migration and in this way aims to contribute to an enhanced policymaking process in Slovakia, other EU countries as well as Norway, Moldova and Georgia. The seminar has been organised by IOM as the coordinator of the EMN activities in Slovakia.

The 8th Educational Seminar on Migration will be about “Migration in a Multilateral World” and will take place in a form of a virtual studio. For the past few years, international migration has remained in the spotlight of policymakers, researchers and media around the globe. The fact that people increasingly move across borders for different reasons – whether it is for work, studies or to seek refuge - is recognized by countries cooperating in the migration field bilaterally, as part of bigger regional clusters or, since 2016, universally within the United Nations.

During three intensive days, the Seminar will focus on how migration and multilateralism is intertwined in the context of policies, politics and field work as well as how the international cooperation affects migrants and refugees in transiting or destination countries. Speakers and participants will reflect on how migrants and refugees impact a country’s economy, exploring links between labour migration, remittances and development of source and host countries.

Topics:

  • Multilateralism and the United Nations
  • Labour migration and development nexus
  • Legal migration pathways and the concept of waiting hood
  • Slovak migration policies
