Asylum applicants in the EU in 2018 and in the first quarter of 2019 (Eurostat)

On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, which is organized every year on 20th June by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Eurostat published an infographic on annual asylum data for 2018 . Eurostat also published its Asylum quarterly report. In the first quarter of 2019, the number of first-time asylum applicants slightly increased : 4% more compared to the 4th quarter of 2018.

Eurostat-article describes in its Asylum quarterly reports recent developments in relation to numbers of asylum applicants and first instance decisions on asylum applications in the European Union.

Some key messages in the data of the first quarter of 2019:

  • First-time asylum applicants up 4% in Q4 2018 compared to Q1 2019.
  • Most applications from Syrians, Venezuelans and Afghans.
  • Most applicants for asylum in Germany, France and Spain.
  •  In the first quarter of 2019, 36% of first instance decisions on asylum applications taken by EU Member States were positive.
