MEPs highlight the need for an effective and well-functioning European Border and Coast Guard Agency compliant with fundamental rights

Today, the European Parliament adopted a resolution wrapping up the fact-finding investigation by the Working Group on Frontex Scrutiny with 366 votes in favour, 154 against, and 15 abstaining. The Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) inter alia share concerns over the situation in Greece, Lithuania and Hungary.

Arrivals through the Central Mediterranean accounts for one of every two detections at EU borders

14/09/2023

Frontex revealed today that the number of detections of irregular border crossings at EU’s external borders rose by one fifth (+18%) in the first eight months of 2023 to over 232 350 and that this increase was primarily driven by the number of arrivals through the Central Mediterranean, which remains the main migratory route into the EU.

The Belgian Red Cross-Flanders is looking for volunteers to help refugees searching for missing relatives

During the first six months of 2023, the Belgian Red Cross-Flanders already helped 152 people – mostly refugees – in their search for lost relatives. That is the highest number since 2017. The organisation is looking for volunteers who want to commit at least 6 hours a week to help find the missing relatives.

The Commission present the State of Schengen Report 2023

The renewed Schengen Information System enters into operation

Today the upgraded Schengen Information System (SIS) enters into operation to enhance security and border management in Europe. The renewed SIS is being enhanced to include new categories of alerts, biometrics such as palm prints, fingermarks, and DNA records for missing persons, and additional tools to combat crime and terrorism.

Ad Hoc Query on the possibility of concluding a marriage between a European citizen and a third-country national who resides illegally on the territory

In the Czech Republic, a marriage can, under the current legislation, only take place if both parties have legal residence on the territory. 15 Member States make a joint declaration at the 2nd European Conference on Border Managament
