Nicole de Moor launches a prevention campaign to combat irregular migration from Guinea

A 1.5-kilometre fence to prevent transmigrants from crossing the highway

Fencing work has started today along the Westkerke and Mannekensvere highway car parks on the E40 to prevent transmigrants from crossing the highway to climb into lorries aiming to reach the UK.

Human trafficking network dismantled in the Brussels Northern Quarter

As part of an investigation into acts of trafficking in human beings, 30 brothels in the northern district of Brussels have been placed under judicial seal. 25 people were subject to judicial arrest and 23 others were administratively deprived of their liberty.

In 2022, around 330 000 irregular border crossings were detected at EU’s external border

In a press release today, Frontex reported 330 000 irregular border crossings detected in 2022. This is the highest number since 2016 and an increase of 64% from the previous year.

The European Union can act to prevent and respond to deaths at sea, according to the FRA

Following the recent tragic loss of life off the Greek coast, a short report of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) suggests what the EU should do to prevent more deaths at sea. Klaus Vanhoutte has been appointed as national coordinator for the fight against human trafficking and smuggling

Today, in the Committee on Justice of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne announced that Mr. Klaus Vanhoutte, former director of Payoke and one of the experts of the Special Committee on Trafficking in Human Beings and People Smuggling, had been recruited and appointed as national coordinator for the fight against human trafficking and smuggling.

EU and UK agree to increase cooperation to curb irregular migration in the English Channel

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed to strengthen cooperation between the EU and UK on migration through developing a new working arrangement between UK agencies and Frontex, enabling them to "work together on critical operational and strategic challenges including the situation in the Channel".

Italy declares a state of emergency after a sharp rise in migrants arriving by sea

Today, Italy declared a state of emergency over the “sharp rise” in the number of migrants arriving on the country’s shores through the dangerous Mediterranean route. It’s the first time Italy has resorted to such a drastic measure since 2011.

28 130 irregular border crossings detected in the first two months of 2023

In the first two months of 2023, the number of irregular border crossings reported by national authorities increased to 28 130, roughly in line with the same period last year. The Central Mediterranean and Western Balkan routes remain the most active.

Ad Hoc Query on the possibility of concluding a marriage between a European citizen and a third-country national who resides illegally on the territory

In the Czech Republic, a marriage can, under the current legislation, only take place if both parties have legal residence on the territory. Transmigration via Belgium to the United Kingdom has decreased by 90% since 2018

Climate change and conflicts are multiplying trafficking risks, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)
