Belgium and Germany will increase their cooperation to monitor beneficiaries of international protection who temporarily return to their countries of origin

Today, the Belgian State Secretary for Asylum Policy and Migration and the German Minister of Foreign Affairs signed a letter of intent to increase the cooperation of the two countries regarding monitoring beneficiaries of international protection who travel to their countries of origin.

Belgium and Germany will increase their cooperation to better control beneficiaries of international protection who temporarily return to their countries of origin, as indicated in the letter of intent signed by the Belgian State Secretary for Asylum Policy and Migration, Mr Theo Francken, and the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Thomas de Maizière.

Beneficiaries of international protection sometimes travel back to their countries of origin from Belgium or Germany, which is not allowed. If they do travel back to their countries of origin, this may indicate that the reasons for granting a protection status no longer apply, and the protection status can be withdrawn.

The Belgian State Secretary for Asylum Policy and Migration indicated that some beneficiaries of international protection residing in Belgium try to avoid detection by travelling to neighbouring countries (including Germany) before departing to their countries of origin. In order to better control this phenomenon, Belgium and Germany will cooperate more closely and exchange more information.

A similar agreement was previously concluded with the Netherlands.
