Annual Report on Trafficking and Smuggling in Human Beings 2023 (Myria)

For the EU Anti-Trafficking Day, the European Commission is launching an awareness-raising campaign to inform citizens on the reality of this crime. The European Commission invites every citizen to help raise awareness by becoming part of the ‘End human trafficking. Break the invisible chain’ campaign.

Human trafficking awareness week in Brussels (5 days)

Ad Hoc Query on practices and challenges in identifying victims of torture and ill-treatment in the context of international and temporary protection

This ad hoc query focuses on the early detection and identification of presumed victims of torture or other forms of inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in international and temporary protection procedures. It inter alia collects information from EMN Member Countries on guidance and training available to competent authorities, on referrals to medico-legal assessments and use of medico-legal documentation as well as on challenges and good practices in this field.

Nearly 4.2 million people under temporary protection in EU countries, according to Eurostat

06/10/2023

Eurostat published today data referring to the attribution of temporary protection status based on the Council Implementing Decision 2022/382 of 4 March 2022. On 31 August 2023, almost 4.2 million non-EU citizens, who fled Ukraine as a consequence of the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022, had temporary protection status in EU countries.

Human trafficking network dismantled in the Brussels Northern Quarter

As part of an investigation into acts of trafficking in human beings, 30 brothels in the northern district of Brussels have been placed under judicial seal. 25 people were subject to judicial arrest and 23 others were administratively deprived of their liberty.

Commission proposes to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 2025

The European Commission is proposing today to further extend the temporary protection for people fleeing Russia's aggression against Ukraine from 4 March 2024 to 3 March 2025. This Commission proposal will now have to be adopted by the Council.

EMN Belgium attends the launch of the Blue Heart Campaign against human trafficking

Klaus Vanhoutte has been appointed as national coordinator for the fight against human trafficking and smuggling

Today, in the Committee on Justice of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne announced that Mr. Klaus Vanhoutte, former director of Payoke and one of the experts of the Special Committee on Trafficking in Human Beings and People Smuggling, had been recruited and appointed as national coordinator for the fight against human trafficking and smuggling.

Transmigration via Belgium to the United Kingdom has decreased by 90% since 2018
