This ad hoc query examines national practices across EMN Member and Observer countries regarding the duration of researchers' residence permits under Directive (EU) 2016/801, procedures for managing gaps between hosting arrangements during permit renewals, and the impact of such gaps on continuous residence requirements for long-term residence and citizenship. 

The commission is expected to present a proposal to amend and merge the directive on students and the researchers directive. Background information and state of play can be found here.

Today the Commission proposed to make it easier and more attractive for non-EU national students, researchers and other groups to enter and stay in the EU for periods exceeding three months.

From 1 June to 23 August 2012, the consultation collects opinions on future rules on the entry and residence of non-EU national researchers, students, school pupils, unremunerated trainees and volunteers in the EU, with a view to the revision of the students and researchers Directives.
