IOM organized the 1st Diaspora Ministerial Conference in Geneva

On 18-19 June 2013, governments and experts shared experiences in order to identify better ways to engage, enable and enpower diaspora communities and promote them as development actors.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) organized, in the framework of the International Dialogue on Migration (IDM) the first Diaspora Ministerial Conference (DMC).

Over 500 participants including 55 Ministers and high-level government officials, 143 country delegations and representatives of academia, media and private sector participated in the event.

The meeting helped to identify ways to engage, enable and empower diaspora communities; gathered recommendations for diaspora-related policy, research and operations and created networks among ministers and senior officials working with diasporas. The outcomes of the meeting will inform the UN General Assembly’s High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development scheduled to take place in New York on 3rd- 4th October 2013.

The summary of the discussions is available as well as other meeting documents.
