Myriadoc 10: Belgium, on the way to the UK

This report by the Federal Migration Centre Myria analyses the phenomenon of transit migration to the UK in Belgium. Myria advocates for clearer policies in this field, with respect for the fundamental rights of transit migrants.

"Belgium, on the way to the UK" drafts a first profile of transit migrants in Belgium and discusses the phenomenon in its broader European context. The report examines both the governmental focus on detention and return and the role of civil society in providing basic aid to transit migrants. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between transit migration and smuggling of human beings, and to the vulnerable position of unaccompanied minors.

Myria recalls the obligation to respect the right to human dignity, the right to information and the prohibition of torture and makes a series of specific recommendations for policy-makers.

The report is available in French and Dutch, and will soon be available in English. A summary is also available in French and Dutch on the website of Myria.
