The "white marriage" unit starts operating in Brussels South police area

A "White Marriages" cell has been created in the Special Laws Division of the Brussels South police area. It has started its activities on 3 december 2012.

Given the complexity of and rise in white marriages and legal cohabitations , a "white marriages" cell has been created in the Brussels South police area and tasked with the following missions:

  • Write the minutes of initial complaints and denunciations of marriages in the area of ​​police.
  • Treat "white marriage" apostilles emanating from the "marital status service" and conduct resulting investigations
  • Manage and centralize administrative investigations prior to marriages and legal cohabitations involving a foreigner, as requested by the "marital status" of the three municipal administrations of the police area.
  • Check the validity of identification documents presented for registration to the municipal authorities and perform checks in police databases within the framework of the project "Europe" (4150 checks in 2011).
The objective of the cell is to analyze, in compliance with the law and individuals, potential abuses of marriages and legal cohabitations and this in collaboration with internal and external partners.
