The European Commission presents an EU Action Plan for the Eastern Mediterranean migration route

The European Council invited the Commission to present an Action Plan on the Eastern Mediterranean route, as part of a broader approach to help alleviate the pressure on Member States faced with large numbers of irregular arrivals along the route. This Action Plan identifies operational measures that will contribute to addressing the ongoing challenges along this route.

At the extraordinary meeting of the European Council of 9 February 2023, Heads of State and Government called on the Commission to present an Action Plan for the Eastern Mediterranean route, with a view to alleviating the pressure on the most affected Member States and effectively preventing irregular arrivals.

This plan outlines measures aimed at:

  • Preventing irregular departures, combatting migrant smuggling and trafficking in human beings as well as providing legal migration pathways

  • Strengthening border management

  • Enhancing return and readmission cooperation

  • Ensuring efficient migration management, improving asylum procedures and supporting sufficient reception capacity

This Action Plan complements the EU Action Plans for the Western Balkans, Central Mediterranean, Western Mediterranean and Atlantic routes.
