During this morning national event, EMN Belgium presented key developments on migration and asylum in 2022 and invited numerous key experts to explain important issues and perspectives for 2023.

This international conference, organised by EMN Georgia and EMN Latvia, focuses on a commonly understood language as a tool in migration management and in particular on the EMN Glossary on Asylum and Migration.

This conference, organised by the European Migration Network in partnership with the Podgorica Chairmanship in the Office of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP), seeks to discuss how to tackle common challenges on the Western Balkan migratory route and future actions both on a regional and national level.

On Tuesday 7 March, the Belgian Contact Point of the EMN discussed current information needs with the Cabinet of Nicole de Moor to make EMN resources available to policymakers.

The European Migration Network (EMN) Glossary is an essential resource, which offers an EU-wide multidisciplinary vocabulary of approximately 500 terms and concepts related to asylum and migration. Let's focus today on the term "displaced person" to make sure we have a common understanding and use of the term!

Today, EMN Belgium was invited by Hogeschool Gent to present the learning tool "Destination Europe" to a group of 45 Bachelor students. The role plays engaged them in real-life scenarios of decision making around migration and integration.

This Conference will explore the impact of climate change on global migration patterns. It also aims at discussing what could be done in the future to address the impacts of climate change on displacement and migration, both in terms of foreign and development policies and in relation to policy frameworks for migration.

The EMN Member Countries have voted on the topics which will be analyzed in studies and informs in 2023. In line with the targets outlined in the 2023-2025 work programme of the EMN, 3 new studies and 10 new informs will be published next year.

How can we create flexible housing capacities for asylum applicants and beneficiaries of international protection? This conference will gather national and international experts to discuss challenges, good practices and lessons learnt when it comes to dealing with pressures on the asylum housing system, both in the context of international and temporary protection.

The Conference allowed participants to gain insight into legal provisions against labour exploitation and to examine the role of different actors in upholding the rights of foreign workers. Good practices and lessons learnt from selected countries were presented and discussed.

How to guide migrant women towards integration services and the labour market more effectively? The conference of EMN Finland will tackle the challenges related to employment of migrant women. Solutions will be sought from best practices in Finland and abroad.

On 15 and 16 November 2022, EMN Belgium welcomed over 20 enthusiastic young people from a variety of backgrounds at its EMN Migration Youth Event. Over the course of two days, they were submerged in a programme focusing on both the theory and the practice of asylum and migration policy in Belgium and the European Union.

The European Migration Network Belgium is happy to announce its Migration Youth Event, bringing together young people from all over Europe. Enriching discussions alternate with a visit to a reception centre, interactive learning tools are followed by stepping in the shoes of a refugee and fun is mixed with learning. After two days in the heart of decision-making ‘Brussels’, you return home with a backpack filled with new impressions, new knowledge and new connections!

The European Migration Network invites you to participate in a survey on one of its key products: the EMN Asylum and Migration Glossary.

The 8th EMN Educational Seminar on Migration will be about “Migration in a Multilateral World” and will take place online from 24 till 26 August 2021. During three intensive days, the Seminar will focus on how migration and multilateralism is intertwined and how the international cooperation affects migrants and refugees in transiting or destination countries.

In the second half of 2021 EMN Belgium will continue to provide input for multiple EMN outputs. This way EMN Belgium tries to contribute to an evidence-based migration and asylum policy in Belgium and the EU and Norway.

Since the first publication of the European Migration Network (EMN) Asylum and Migration Glossary in 2010, it has been a valuable resource for practitioners, policy-makers and researchers in the field of migration and asylum. By harmonising EU asylum and migration terms, the EMN Glossary offers an EU-wide multidisciplinary vocabulary of terms and concepts, translated into over 20 languages. The latest version of July 2020 contains approximately 500 terms.  

The year 2020 brought about unforeseen developments in the areas of migration and asylum. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the number of migrants, asylum applicants and returns, and also acted as a catalyst for development of new digital solutions in asylum and migration management. These new challenges came in addition to persisting ones such as the need to continuously improve migration management systems and ensure the protection of refugees. The Annual Report on Migration and Asylum, published by the European Migration Network (EMN), provides an overview of the key developments in the EU Member States and Norway in 2020.

What is the EMN? How does it operate? Who is involved? And how can I engage with the EMN? The “Getting to know the EMN” open day on 2 June 2021 will offer participants the opportunity to find answer to these questions and more.

The online event focused on the current legal framework on alternatives to detention, the implementation of these alternatives in practice and the identification of emerging good practices and pilot projects.

Georgia and Moldova have joined the EMN in March 2021 as observers. This will enhance mutual collaboration and understanding on asylum and migration.

On 15 December, EMN Belgium and the EMN Return Expert Group will host a half-day webinar on Alternatives to Detention. The online event focuses on the current legal framework on alternatives to detention, the implementation of these alternatives in practice and the identification of emerging good practices and pilot projects.
