Migration in rights and numbers 2019 (Myria)

Myria's annual report highlights recent available data and it provides an analysis of a number of issues at stake in the field of immigration and asylum. Myria also addresses a number of recommendations towards the government on the respect of fundamental rights of foreigners.

The report (available in both French and Dutch) provides a clarifying view of the most striking figures and demographic trends. In this report Myria inter alia highlights that:

  • 19.038 persons applied for international protection in Belgium in 2018. Compared to 2017, this is an increase of about 25%.A third of these applications was filed by Syrians and Palestinians. On average 52,5% of the decisions were positive.
  • The number of regularisations was historically low in 2016. But it has risen substantially over the last two years, especially when it comes to Armenians, Kosovans and Russians. It almost doubled between 2016 and 2018.
  • The number of foreign self-employed workers is growing year after year. In 2017 there were 120.012 foreign self-employed workers. A large majority of them (82%) are EU-citizens.
