The number of persons regularized on humanitarian grounds in Belgium decreased in 2022, as reported by Myria

Myria has published the second thematic section of its 2023 annual report. This section entitled "Humanitarian and medical regularisation" reports that 2.038 persons were regularized on humanitarian grounds in Belgium in 2022 (10% less than in 2021) and 248 persons were authorised to reside in Belgium on medical grounds in 2022 (against 1,330 people whose application was refused).

In this publication, Myria inter alia highlights that:

  • 2,038 persons were regularized for humanitarian reasons in Belgium in 2022, i.e. 10% less than in 2021. The number of persons regularized on humanitarian grounds has in fact fallen from 3,500 to nearly 2,000 between 2020 and 2022. At the same time, the number of persons whose stay was refused on these grounds increased from 2,500 persons to 3,250 over the same period. While there were more persons regularized than persons refused residence between 2018 and 2020, the trend reversed in 2022. Indeed, in 2022 the proportion of persons regularized reached 39% (compared to 63% in 2019). The main nationalities of persons regularized for humanitarian reasons in Belgium in 2022 are Moroccans, Congolese and Albanians. The number of Moroccans whose stay was refused on these grounds is particularly high in 2022.

  • 248 persons were regularized for medical reasons in Belgium in 2022. Applications to stay on medical grounds reached the lowest figure ever recorded, i.e. 1,147 in 2022. That same year, 1,065 obtained a decision, including 170 positive and 895 negative. 248 persons were authorized to stay in Belgium for medical reasons in 2022, i.e. 28% more than in 2021. 1,330 applications to stay in Belgium on medical grounds were refused in 2022 (which is quite stable compared to 2021). The persons regularized for medical reasons in Belgium in 2022 are of Moroccan (22), Congolese (20), Macedonian (17), Armenian (15) and Guinean (11) nationality.
