More than 69.000 people acquired Belgian nationality in 2025

According to figures published by Statbel on 10 June 2026, 69.017 persons acquired Belgian nationality in 2025. The most common previous nationalities among those who became Belgian were Moroccan, Romanian, Syrian, Polish and Italian. Compared to 2024, the number of acquisitions of Belgian nationality increased by almost 9.000.

According to Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, 69.017 individuals acquired Belgian nationality in 2025. In total, Belgium recorded 69.049 nationality changes during the year, including 32 cases in which Belgian nationality was lost.

The number of people acquiring Belgian nationality continued to rise in 2025. In 2024, 60.108 individuals became Belgian citizens. The latest figures therefore represent an increase of almost 15% in one year.

The largest groups acquiring Belgian nationality in 2025 were Moroccans (6.502), Romanians (4.366), Syrians (4.200), Poles (2.989) and Italians (2.848). Together, these five nationalities accounted for around 30% of all acquisitions of Belgian nationality recorded during the year.
