CGRS publishes asylum statistics for July 2014

Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.

The statistics for July 2014 show the following trends:
•In July 2014, 1,490 asylum applications were registered in Belgium. This is an increase with 13.7% compared to July 2013.
•Of those  1,490 asylum applications, 496 (or 33.3% of the total number of applications) were subsequent applications.
• It is noteworthy that in July Eritrea became for the first time the main country of orgin (with 214 apllications, 14.4% of the total number of applications). Another important country of orgin was Afghanistan (9.7%). Next, 8.8% of the persons applying for asylum were persons with an undefined citizenship. Other important countries of origin were Syria (6.9%) and Iraq (5.6%). Russia, Guinea, DR Congo, Georgia and Oekraine complete the top 10 of the countries of origin.
•In July, the CGRS has taken 1,673 asylum decisions, including decisions on subsequent applications. There were 428 decisions to grant the refugee status and 146 decisions to grant subsidiary protection status.
•At the end of July, the total workload of the CGRS was 5,657 cases. 3,900 cases can be seen as a normal workload. Consequently, the actual backlog is 1,757 cases.

In contradiction to Eurostat statistics, these CGRS-statistics do not include accompanied children.
