Andrea Rea & Nawal Bensaid (ULB) report on Forced Marriages in the Brussel Capital Region

This study was conducted within the framework of the National Action Plan against violence between partners and other forms of domestic violence.

The study, which was undertaken at the request of the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior and the Equal Opportunities, Joëlle Milquet, and the Secretary of State for Equal Opportunities of the Region of Brussels-Capital, Bruno De Lille, concludes that figures about forced marriages, which are available in institutional registers, are extremely low (when they exist and this is not often the case).

Still the authors encourage stakeholders to remain vigilant, referring to the non-representativeness of data, non reportability of cases, non awareness of staff who should be trained to screen potential victims of forced marriages etc.

The study summary is available here (in French).

More on the study and its follow up in the press release (in French).
