The Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration wants compulsory integration courses for migrant workers

Nicole de Moor calls for an interministerial conference on labour migration to better protect and integrate migrant workers. Integration courses for this target group should be considered.

Single permit applications almost doubled last year, reaching 9.543 first permits issued. However, recent cases (such as the “Borealis case”) and studies show that the single permit is sometimes misused, leaving workers in situations of significant dependence vis-à-vis the employer.

In order for migrant workers to better integrate, the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration is in favour of them following compulsory integration courses. “Today, migrant workers are exempt; they are not expected to learn the language or to integrate. However, those who are integrated are better able to assert their rights”, declares Ms de Moor.

In addition to compulsory integration, the Secretary of State would also like to require guarantees of suitable housing via an explicit condition at the time of the application or a better information exchange and better controls.

Ms de Moor also wants to give more time to victims of offences committed by the employer to find a new employer once the social inspection has terminated the employment. The 90-day period to find a new job should extend to 180 days, according to the Secretary of State.

Finally, Nicole de Moor also wants to see written into the law that the employer bears the cost of the procedure (138 euros).
