Nicole de Moor concludes an agreement with Senegal on return and legal migration

The Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Nicole de Moor signed today an agreement with the Senegalese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Annette Seck. Belgium and Senegal agreed to cooperate on the return of irregularly staying Senegalese nationals and on legal migration.

142 Senegalese nationals applied for asylum in Belgium last year. The vast majority of them turned out not to be in need of protection after examination. In addition, 35 irregularly staying Senegalese were intercepted in Belgium. Returning to Senegal has been difficult in recent years, leading to the country being mentioned in European discussions on visa sanctions. Last year, only 4 irregularly staying Senegalese returned voluntarily from Belgium.

The new agreement between Belgium and Senegal focuses particularly on voluntary return, a priority for the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Nicole de Moor. Senegal is committed to assisting voluntary returnees in their reintegration into society after their arrival.

Belgium and Senegal will also cooperate on legal migration. At the moment, some 3,500 Senegalese reside legally in Belgium. Both countries will support pilot projects on circular migration
