International Conference: Beyond Borders - Prevention and cooperation in the event of self-destructive behaviour among asylum seekers

The Organisation wide Incident Team (KCT) organizes an international conference to provide the opportunity to share knowledge and learn from each other to better deal with situations of self-destructive behaviour (suicide attempt, hunger or thirst strike, etc.) among asylum seekers.

What

The Organisation wide Incident Team (KCT) is a partnership of COA, IND and DT&V, all government services that work within the immigration chain, being part of the Department of the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security. The KCT is deployed to de-escalate if the following situations apply: suicide threat, suicide attempt, hunger or/and thirst strike, or other self-destructive behaviour (self-mutilation/self-harm).

The KCT wants to provide an opportunity to discuss issues such as: What causes someone to express themselves as suicidal? Are cultural aspects involved? To what extent are procedures decisive? And what about hunger or thirst strikers? Are employees sufficiently equipped to deal with these sometimes complex situations?
