In today's press release, the European Commission reports the approval of the first strand of EU funding to support Member States' efforts in the fields of asylum, migration and integration, and internal security for the period 2014-202. Concretely,  22 new multiannual national programmes are now endorsed for the sum of approximately €1.8 billion. The second strand, an additional 36 national programmes, will be approved later this year.

Two different funds are concerned by this decision:

  • The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) contributes to the efficient management of migration flows and the development of a common approach to asylum and migration.
  • The Internal Security Fund (ISF) helps ensure a high level of security and crime prevention in the Union, while at the same time enable legitimate travel and ensure solid management of the Union's external borders.

Hence, it will have concrete implications at national level such as enhancing reception capacities, improving the quality of asylum procedures in line with the Union standards, integrating migrants at local/regional levels and increasing the sustainability of return programmes, improving Member States' border management, improving cross-border law enforcement cooperation and strengthening Member States' capacity to effectively manage security-related risks.
