Annual Report 2022 (CGRS)

In its annual report, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) provides a global overview of asylum figures for the year 2022. The report also focuses on international aspects as well as on the training and well-being of the staff.

The annual report of the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) highlights inter alia the following elements for the year 2022:

  • In 2022, 36.871 persons filed an application for international protection with the Immigration Office. This is an increase of 42% compared to 2021.
     
  • The main countries of origin of applicants for international protection were Afghanistan, Syria, Palestine, Burundi and Eritrea.
     
  • 70.6% of applicants were men, compared to 29.4% women.
     
  • The Immigration Office recorded 3,853 international protection applicants who declared themselves to be unaccompanied foreign minors, i.e. 19.7% more than in 2021.
     
  • In 2022, the CGRS took 20,514 decisions for a total of 25,066 people, an increase of 10.8% compared to 2021.
     
  • The protection rate was 43%.
     
  • In 2022, the largest number of refugee statuses was granted to Syrians, Afghans, Eritreans, Palestinians and Turks. The largest number of subsidiary protection statuses was granted in 2022 to Yemenis, Somalis and Syrians.
     
  • The backlog (i.e. the number of files for which the CGRS still has to make a decision) increased to 16,415 files (19,157 people), a slight increase of 4.6%.
