To put these numbers into perspective, in 2022, 48,482 inhabitants obtained Belgian nationality and 39 inhabitants lost it, which represents a total of 48,521 nationality changes. The top five nationalities who obtained Belgian nationality in 2022 include Moroccans (4,842), Syrians (3,615), Romanians (2,791), Iraqi (2,001), and Afghans (1,979).

The figures related to May 2023 come from the provisional monthly results of the statistics on changes of nationality calculated on the basis of Demobel, Statbel’s demographic database.

Demobel contains an overview of the structure of the population (numbers, gender, age, nationalities) and of the movement of the population (births, deaths, migration, changes of nationality).
