10.093 victims of human trafficking were registered in the EU in 2022, according to Eurostat

Recent Eurostat figures show that in 2022, 10.093 victims of human trafficking were registered in the European Union. There were 8.064 suspected traffickers and 2.097 convicted traffickers. The statistics also shed light on gender distribution among traffickers and victims, as well as exploitation patterns.

In a press release published today, Eurostat highlights that:

  • Nearly two-thirds (63%) of the victims of human trafficking that were registered in the EU in 2022, were women or girls. This marked a decline from the preceding years, where women and girls constituted 68% in both 2020 and 2021. In contrast, less than a quarter of suspected and convicted traffickers were women in 2022, with figures at 23% and 22%, respectively.

  • Approximately 82% of all trafficked victims were either subject to sexual exploitation or forced labour. Notably, the number of registered victims exploited for forced labour or services (3.990) came remarkably close to those sexually exploited (4.014) for the first time. Moreover, a segment of 18% (1.699 individuals) were trafficked for various other purposes, including organ removal, benefit fraud, criminal activities, forced begging, and more.
