Belgium resettled 287 refugees last year, mostly Congolese and Syrians

In 2023, 287 refugees were resettled in Belgium, including 154 Congolese from Rwanda, 81 Syrians from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt, and 26 Sudanese, 18 Ethiopians and 8 Eritreans from Egypt.

Each year, the Belgian government sets a quota that determines the number of people to be resettled: in 2023, Belgium committed to resettle 500 refugees. Despite the many efforts, Belgium's commitment to resettle 500 refugees could not be fulfilled last year, mainly due to the saturation of Fedasil's reception network.

Last year, 287 refugees in total were resettled in Belgium, mostly Congolese refugees from Rwanda and Syrian refugees from Jordan and Egypt. Of the 287 refugees, 190 passed through a new reception centre located in Alveringem (West Flanders), which is managed by Fedasil and exclusively dedicated to the reception and support of resettled refugees.

In 2024, Fedasil will also invest in alternative reception locations (outside its regular reception network). Cooperation with civil society will be central, particularly via Community Sponsorship – a sponsorship programme where volunteers receive, guide and accompany resettled refugees for a year in the Belgian society.
