A humanitarian corridor to welcome 150 asylum seekers from Syria
On Wednesday afternoon in Brussels, Theo Francken, State Secretary for Asylum Policy and Migration, as well as the President of the Community of Sant'Egidio in Belgium and the representatives of the recognized cults in Belgium launched together a humanitarian corridor to accommodate 150 Syrian asylum seekers in optimal conditions.
Concretely, 150 Syrians (mainly families with children and elderly/sick people) staying in Turkey and Lebanon will receive in the forthcoming months a humanitarian visa. The Sant’Egidio community as well as Caritas Belgium and the recognized cults, gathered in the comity “Together in peace”, will take in charge most of the accomodation.
This original inter-religious collaboration responds more broadly to the calls of the European Parliament and international organizations to develop “safe and legal pathways”. Those 150 Syrians must be added to the 1.150 refugees to be welcomed in the framework of the resettlement program.
