Fee to renew, extend or replace a temporary residence permit at the level of the municipalities

Foreign nationals might have to pay a fee of maximum 50 euro in certain municipalities when they renew, extend or replace a temporary residence permit at the level of the municipalities. Modifications by the Law of 18 December 2016, published today in the Belgian Official Gazette, made it possible for municipalities to collect this fee.

Modifications by the Law of 18 December 2016 made it possible for municipalities to collect a fee when foreigners renew, extend or replace a temporary residence permit. The government explained the measure by referring to the administrative costs related to the processing of the application.

The maximum amount itself is not inscribed in this Law, but will be determined by an Executive Decree. The State Secretary for Immigration and Asylum already announced that the maximum fee will be 50 EUR.

Municipalities will have the possibility to collect this fee (if they choose to do so) on top of the fee for the production cost of the residence card (17,5 EURO).

This fee also differs from the fee that must be paid for the application of certain residence permits.
