Italy takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from Greece
From 1 July 2014, Italy takes over the Presidency of ther Council of the European Union from Greece and will hold it until 31 December 2014.
Growth and employment, a space for freedom and security, full exercise of citizenship rights and a stronger role of Europe in the world: such are the priorities of the Italian Presidency programme "Europe A fresh Start".
In the field of immigration, the Presidency inter alia intends to:
- promote the implementation of the lines of action of the “Mediterranean Task Force”.
- pursue strategies outlined in the “EU action on migratory pressures”,
- support cooperation agreements with third countries on border control and the fight against irregular immigration
- further develop dialogue with third countries of origin and transit of migratory flows in line with the GAMM
- prevent the possible abuse of legal migratory channels
- foster labour mobility, especially in the Mediterranean region
- improve policies in favour of foreign unaccompanied minors
- raise the level of achievements on integration of third countries’ nationals
- give priority to an effective and sustainable return policy
- stimulate the development of coherent action to combat trafficking in human beings
In the field of asylum, the Presidency inter alia intends to:
- promote the implementation of the Common European Asylum System
- help prevent the phenomenon of “asylum shopping”
- progress on mutual recognition of national decisions on the international protection and free movement of the beneficiaries of protection
- promote genuine solidarity at European level, in particular in emergency situations
- support the further enhancement of the activities and role of EASO.
