The EU Commission is on its way towards a European Agenda on Migration

The College of Commissioners held a first orientation debate setting out the four main areas where actions are envisaged in the European Agenda on Migration.

Today's Orientation Debate has set out the four main areas where actions are envisaged in the European Agenda on Migration to implement the political guidelines of President Juncker. All are mutually linked and equally important.

  • A strong, fully and coherently implemented Common Asylum System
  • A new European policy on legal migration, attracting the right talent
  • Fighting irregular migration and human trafficking more robustly
  • Securing Europe's external borders in full respect of fundamental rights

The EU Commission has also published a memo today, 4 March, reviewing actions taken and instruments and tools developed during the last 20 years in the field of:

  • Legal migration, mobility and integration
  • A Common European Asylum System
  • Smuggling of migrants into the EU
  • Trafficking in Human Beings
  • Sanctions against the employment of irregular migrants
  • A humane and effective return and readmission policy
  • Operational cooperation at the external borders of the EU
  • EU visa policy
  • External dimension of migration: a wide-ranging approach
