CGRS publishes asylum statistics for March 2014
Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.
The statistics for March 2014 show the following trends:
- In March 2014, 1,177 asylum applications were registered in Belgium. This is a decrease of 18.7% compared to March 2013.
- Of those 1,177 asylum applications, 481 (or 41% of the total number of applications) were subsequent applications.
- In March, the main countries of origin were Afghanistan (145 apllications, 12.3% of the total number of applications), Syria (7.9%), Russia (7.4%), Oekraine (5.6%) and Iraq (5.5%). DR Congo, Guinea, Kosovo, Cameroon and Iran complete the top 10 of the countries of origin.
- In March, the CGRS has taken 1,765 asylum decisions, including decisions on subsequent applications. There were 373 decisions to grant the refugee status and 125 decisions to grant subsidiary protection status.
- At the end of March, the total workload of the CGRS was 6,531 cases. 3,900 cases can be seen as a normal workload. The actual backlog is 2,631 cases.

In contradiction to Eurostat statistics, these CGRS-statistics do not include accompanied children.
